Magoffin County Central

Mountain Parkway Expansion Progress Report — Week of September 21

September 22, 2015

This periodic report includes information on work underway on the Mountain Parkway Expansion. Inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances could affect planned activities.

Magoffin County
Construction and clearing activities are progressing along a nearly six-mile stretch of the Mountain Parkway to the west of Salyersville. The project, described as the Magoffin County Central Segment, runs from just west of Mile Point 70 to just east of Mile Point 75 of the Mountain Parkway.
The speed limit in the area has been reduced to 45 mph. Traffic on the parkway may be slowed or stopped periodically for the safety of workers and travelers.

Gifford Road interchange
Significant construction and site work continues near Gifford Road, where a new interchange is being built. The interchange will provide new access to and from the Mountain Parkway and serve an industrial park being planned just to the north of the interchange.
Workers on the project are building a steel and concrete pier that will support a new Gifford Road overpass across the parkway. Crews also are extending an existing culvert that will run under the eastbound lanes of the Mountain Parkway once the roadway is expanded to four lanes.

KY 30 interchange

Crews are continuing significant clearing and site work around the current KY 30 interchange near Mile Point 72 of the parkway to prepare for construction in the area. The project will include modernizing and improving the KY 30 interchange as well as realigning and widening about 2½ miles of the parkway.

Salyersville interchange
Utility companies working around the KY 7/Salyersville interchange – immediately west of Salyersville’s Restaurant Row area – are continuing to relocate communications and power lines ahead of construction work.

Wolfe County
Engineers recently completed preliminary design work on an 11-mile section of the parkway in Wolfe County and have selected a preferred path for planned widening and improvements.
The Wolfe County Segment runs from just east of Campton to the Lee City/West Liberty (KY 205) interchange.
A preliminary design calls for the parkway to be expanded primarily along the south side of the current roadway. Work to finalize the design plans is underway and expected to be completed by next summer. Property acquisition could begin as early as next summer, but specific schedules for property acquisition and construction depend on availability of funding from the Kentucky General Assembly.

Floyd County
The Mountain Parkway Expansion team continues to study options for extending the parkway between Salyersville and Prestonsburg. The two options are:
• Extending the four-lane parkway along the current KY 114 corridor;
• Building a four-lane expressway in an area to the north of KY 114.
As the project team learns more, it will share additional information, hold another public meeting and gather formal comments to help select the appropriate corridor.
