Two-lane bridge will carry eastbound and westbound lanes
Mountain Parkway Bridge Opening Monday in Salyersville – MOUNTAIN PARKWAY EXPANSION
SALYERSVILLE, Ky. (November 24, 2017) – Motorists traveling the Mountain Parkway near Salyersville will follow a new traffic pattern starting Monday, Nov. 27, as construction crews move lanes to a new Burning Fork bridge. The switch to the new bridge will occur around midday.
The new bridge – just west of Restaurant Row in Salyersville – will carry one lane of eastbound traffic and one lane of westbound traffic. During this phase of construction, shoulder space on the bridge will be limited.
The traffic switch will allow crews to also open a realigned intersection at the U.S. 460/Parkway Drive junction. The intersection is just east of Exit 75 of the Mountain Parkway and includes a traffic signal.
Significant construction activity is underway around the new bridge, and motorists should be cautious when traveling in the area. Speed limits have been reduced, and traffic enforcement has been increased to ensure the safety of both travelers and workers.
“This is one of the most traveled areas of the parkway,” said Marshall Carrier, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s project manager for the Mountain Parkway Expansion. “We are making a lot of progress to improve the roadway, and we hope drivers will continue to show patience as our work continues. Safety is our first priority.”
Once traffic is moved to the new bridge, crews will remove the older bridge across Burning Fork and expand the new bridge. Once complete, the new bridge will carry four lanes of Mountain Parkway traffic.
The Mountain Parkway Expansion is a 46-mile transportation improvement project that will create a wider, safer connection between Eastern Kentucky and the rest of the Commonwealth.
The project will widen 30 miles of the existing parkway from two lanes to four lanes, and will extend the parkway another 16 miles between Salyersville and Prestonsburg.
