Eastbound motorists on the Mountain Parkway should be alert for a barrier at the newly constructed roadway to the twin bridges over Johnson Creek in Magoffin County, about 10 miles west of Salyersville.
The new road alignment to the south of the existing road, just east of mile marker 65, straightens the parkway through a large cut. Traffic heading to Salyersville will continue along the existing road, which curves to the left of the barrier to the new construction, which is marked with large Road Closed signs. The new section of road is scheduled to open in 2024.
Motorists are encouraged to slow down and drive with awareness in all work zones.
The 4.6-mile Magoffin West project and 11-mile Wolfe County project are the fourth and fifth of six segments now under construction for the Mountain Parkway Expansion. Previously completed segments are Morgan County, Salyersville/Restaurant Row and Magoffin Central. The final section of the expansion, the Magoffin-Floyd section from Salyersville to Prestonsburg, is under development.
