The Mountain Parkway Expansion will enhance highway safety along a vital Kentucky corridor and close the transportation gap that currently stands between the citizens of Eastern Kentucky and the rest of the Commonwealth.
The Mountain Parkway Expansion is a 45-mile transportation improvement project in Eastern Kentucky that will create a safer, more modern connection to the region—enhancing access to healthcare, education and economic opportunity. The project widens 32 miles of the existing parkway from Campton, Ky. to Salyersville, Ky. and then extends the four-lane, high-speed corridor an additional 13 miles to Prestonsburg. Ky.
The Mountain Parkway Expansion project officially launched in 2014 under the leadership of Gov. Steve Beshear. The project consists of six segments, all of which are currently completed, under construction or under development. Funding for all segments has been secured.
Once the project is complete, Kentucky will have 400 continuous miles of four-lane, high-speed highway connecting Pikeville to Paducah, creating increased commerce and mobility across the state.
The Mountain Parkway Expansion project is divided into six segments, each with its own construction, environmental and logistical factors. Dividing a large-scale project, like the Mountain Parkway Expansion, into segments helps to minimize traffic disruptions, secure phased funding and satisfy regulatory requirements.
